My (horse) riding-instructor wife purchased this Ion portable PA system about two months ago to use while teaching clinics. We have used it in several large venues - indoor horse arenas measuring over 100 x 200 feet with 50 foot ceilings. It has worked extremely well. I was astonished that something with only 22 W of power to an 8 inch speaker could do so well. The unit comes with a handheld microphone on a fairly long cord. Perfect for announcements, or karaoke. The iPod dock works with any iPod, as it has a sliding backrest to adjust for the type of iPod being used. Worked fine with my Nano. There is a switch that optionally powers the dock for both playing and recharging the iPod.

For the riding clinics, my wife needs to be inside the arena away from the PA system, so we also purchased Audio Technica PRO-88W Wireless Microphone System (171.045 and 171.845 MHz) from Amazon as well. The Audio Technica receiver comes with a cord that plugs into one of the microphone inputs in the Ion Audio unit. The transmitter sits in my wife's pocket and is connected to any standard computer-type microphone headset such as Logitech ClearChat Style Headset.

The Ion Audio unit has a built-in mixer, so that you can independently adjust the volume of two microphones and the iPod relative to each other, and control the overall volume with the master volume control.

For our use, the internal battery is a great feature now that summer is arriving and Karen will be giving clinics and lessons outdoors away from an electrical outlet. We have not run it for very long on the battery, so cannot comment yet on the runtime per charge. But, there are are three very visible green LEDs that display the battery charge level.

For iPod use, even though the sound is not stereo with just the one speaker, the quality is quite good with very good bass response.

The case is surprisingly durable, with metal reinforced corners. The wheels and pop-up handle work well for rolling and the side handles work well for carrying. (The side handles are spring-loaded, so you don't have to listen to them flapping in your car.)

I bought two of these just to play around with them. At $15 each, who can really complain.

Do they work? Well, sort of. If you are out in the open, with a decent mic hooked into the transmitter and are no more than maybe 30 feet away, it is ok. If you are near any kind of electrical interference (lights, radios, etc), then you are going to have a mess on your hands. The mics that come with the units are really poor.

The quality of the construction is pathetic, once again, but it only cost $15 though. Labels all fell off immediately. LED indicator lights may or may not work, but it does have a cool case.

So, if you are doing something like recording your kids playing in the back yard, then these are great. Maybe video taping the wedding or party of a friend who has no money would work well too.

My 15 in 1 memory card reader (generic brand) was able to read and transfer files from the CF card. This was my first time to use CF cards since I use to have the Nikon D80 which is why I was worried since I thought I needed a special card reader for CF UDMA cards. The minimum card speed recommended was 133x from the owner's manual, and my other 233x CF card worked just as well. I know Lexar Professional came up with a much faster CF card (600x). You might want to consider getting that at a higher price if you want to optimize the 8 fps capability of your camera using an external battery grip. Just unpack it, plug it in and the little light on it comes on, telling you it's working with power. No problem with the Mac seeing it instantly. Painless so far. I, like many other Mac users, decided to use Garage Band software. It's somewhat basic but for voicers, it would be perfect and is simple to edit. After a somewhat lengthy setup with the software and plugging in the Samson, it was clear this would be an easy job. Laying down some sample tracks, the mic didn't just perform, it excelled! It has a few proximity quirks but what mic doesn't? Once you learn how it performs, you can do some fun stuff with it. I immediately noticed how well it rejected distant noise or things outside my make shift "studio". The bass, mid and treble are very natural and the end product was very satisfying to the point where The project came out better than I expected. You can put together a great budget studio using the CO1U. This thing is definitely not a toy. It's worth every penny if not more. For serious studio work, you just can't beat it for the price. It even sounds better than the EV RE-20 I'd used for years. It may not outperform a high priced Neumann, Sennheiser, or Heil but not by much. That's how well it worked. Just can't say enough good about it and the client loved the finished product. That's all I needed to know. The only bummer is the little tripod stand. You'll want a boom for it. Pros: great sound, easy setup, quality made. Cons: Other than the supplied stand, none. Bottom line: Don't hesitate to buy it. I bought this to connect the headset jack on my Slacker G2 portable player to the single Aux jack on my Altec Lansing T621 portable stereo system in my office at work. It works great. Same excellent result when I connect the headset jack on my BlackBerry Tour to listen to music.

This product has quality written all over it. Not only does it use gold plated plugs, but consists of a "double wire" (like in an electrical extension cord) rather than a single wire. The sound quality is superior with no distortion or loss of quality, and the cable is sturdy and durable.

I have used various audio connecting cords over the years and like this one the best for connecting a headset jack to a single Aux jack. Note that on a stereo system that has both red and white audio jacks, you need to buy something different to get stereo sound. This product is only for when you are connecting to a single Aux jack.

Got the update.. install, like most well written Macintosh applications went smooth. Did a music CD to enjoy in my van, worked fine and then did an ISO for a linux system which also worked as needed.
