Sony Professional Portable 24-bit Linear Audio Recorder Right now

Bottom line: The best professional audio recorder you can buy in its class and you get what you pay for in terms of recording quality, all metal hefty body which withstands elements, high quality in-built microphones, an awesome limiter, everlasting battery life and lastly but not least, needs no operating manual to use.

My experience with build quality: I have ordered this for recording audio while I am shooting video with my Canon mark II 5D camera. I found PCM-D50 is very ruggedly built with all metal body and reassuring heft. I am quite sure this can withstand considerable field abuse like my old Sony Walkman professional. However, I was surprised to found that Sony has not provided any neck strap attaching provision with this recorder. It does have a wrist strap slot, but Sony does to supply that with the recorder too. If you want to securely carry it, you need to buy an optional carry case from Sony! To me the carry case is a must as this is a costly device, which is also too big and heavy to slip in any pocket.

Usability: The recorder is very simple to operate as it has standard audio recorder symbol buttons. Clicking the record button sets the recorder into record pause mode. Pressing the pause button starts and pause the recording, so it is a no brainer to operate.

Level control and Limiter: Recording levels is set by looking at a LCD bar graph and adjusting the Recording Level knob. The optimal level and clipping levels are indicated by two LEDS, this makes the level adjustments very easy. To handle sound with large variation in volume (high dynamic range), this recorder has an inbuilt limiter circuit, which can be turned on by flipping a switch. Once limiter is on, the recorder reduces all transient high volumes to the safe level without producing any clipping. The amazing part is, this limiter does not produce the typical limiter "pumping" effect. Frankly I bought this recorder solely for its wonderful limiter circuit.

In-built Microphones and recording quality: The recorder has two very sensitive and accurate microphones which can be arranged into 90 degree, 0 degree or 120 degree configuration to suit your recording needs. The microphones are so sensitive that they pick up all handling noise and wind noise. In fact the wind noise sensitivity is so high that it is almost impossible to use it without a wind screen over its microphone. Sony has not provided any wind screen with the recorder so that you will have to buy a pricy Sony wind screen AD-PCM1. If you are good in sewing then you can possibly construct one from a piece of artificial fur from a soft toy. All you need to do is to make a small furry bag which fits over the microphone protection cage and it will do the trick. The recorder boasts a signal to noise ratio 93 dB or more, which is excellent. I tested it audibly by cranking the recording level and output volume to maximum with no input at line-in. Even at the super high gain at pre amp and headphone amp stage, my phones were absolutely quite and I could barely hear any faint white noise. That was really impressive. When I have recorded some voice and ambient noise, I was surprised by the super clarity and realism of the recording. I believe I have good ear for recording fidelity and this recorder is the best if I compare it with my other recorders from Olympus, mAudio and Zoom. However I must also say it is not an apple to apple comparison as those recorders are not in the same price range as of Sony PCM-D50.

Tripod mount: As I have said before, the in-built microphones of this recorder is very sensitive and picks up all handling noise. So while recording, keep it resting on a stationary object or mount on a table top tripod. The recorder has a tripod attaching hole at bottom. Sony also sells a wired remote control to further eliminate any noise while pressing buttons to start/stop/pause recording and controlling the recorder from a distance. I have not bought the remote as my application does not need it.

External Microphone: The other way to reduce handling noise is to connect an external microphone through its 2mm stereo jack. It is unfortunate that PCM-D50 does not offer phantom power source or a XLR jack. No wonder as Sony wants you to buy an additional XLR adapter. I have connected a Shure Beta 58A dynamic microphone with the recorder and found the in-built microphone quality is as good as the Shure Beta 58A, so for my application I always use the in-built microphone unless I have to reach very close to the sound source.

Recording media: All audio gets recorded into inbuilt 4GB memory, which can store 1hr55min sound recorded at 96 KHz 24 bit sampling rate. This is more than adequate for my purpose, however the recorder also offers a Memory Stick Pro expansion slot to add more ram is necessary. The recording can be downloaded by connecting the recorder with a laptop or PC through a USB cable. The device gets detected as an external disk drives, and the sound files are located in folders. Just copy the files from the recorder to hard disk and edit it in your favorite DAW.

Pet peeve: There is no in-built speaker; the only way you can listen to the recordings is by plugging in an earphone, headphone or an external amplifier.

Conclusion: PCM-D50 is a wonderful recorder and a must have if you need a high fidelity portable stereo recording device.

Lowest Price Cables Unlimited AUD-1100-50 3.5mm Male to Male Stereo Cable (50 Feet, Black)

I purchased one m/m cable and one f/m cable, both 50ft, to run under the house from my computer to Logitech Z-4's in the livingroom, X-240's in the bedroom. Both work great, no buzzing, and the wire gauge is substantial. Inexpensive way to put on-line music in any room. I use this amp stand both at practice and for small/medium gigs. It's held up great since I bought it. It appears to be made out of the same material as some of the more expensive lines of stands I've used over the years (Quik-Lok, Ultimate, etc).

No issues at all and a great buy for the money.Get more detail about Musician's Gear Deluxe Amp Stand, Black.

The card was defective from the get-go, but it has a lifetime warranty, so no problem, right? Yes, if you have a receipt. Order Behringer AT108 15-Watt Acoustic Amplifier

I am both a bass player and a fidelity freak, always fussing over tone settings. This tiny amp packs BIG sound for everything from a harmonica to a keyboard .... and even my bass. The CD input has NO controls but is a very useful feature just the same. Having Behringer mics and a UB802 mixer, I banked on this being a good amp and was NOT disappointed. The 3-band tone controls do an excellent job of shaping sound to fit any instrument. No 15-watt amp will compete with live drums OR outdoor settings.... and do NOT expect 2 instruments to sound perfect together, but for indoor practicing and intimate small crowds, this amp will impress you. Every musician should have one of these around. Money well spent!Get more detail about Behringer AT108 15-Watt Acoustic Amplifier.

Where To Buy Monster THXI100-SW25NF THX Certified Subwoofer Cable (25 feet)

I worked for 4 different national electronics retailers, and I can honestly say that Monster cables are overpriced. 90% overpriced. Every year, they (monster) would have a contest where we could get all the Monster Products we could buy at 90% off, if we sold X amount of product. At 90% off, Monster still made money.

For example, I purchased the top of the line Z series, and the picture quality WAS THE SAME AS THE PACK IN CABLES. No difference whatsoever.
Only place where cables made a difference was with audio. Speaker cables definitely sound better when bigger.

Oh, and the THX label means nothing, except more money for Monster. It's the SAME cable as the non-THX label. I've seen both cut in 1/2. They are identical.Get more detail about Monster THXI100-SW25NF THX Certified Subwoofer Cable (25 feet).

Shop For 3.5mm Stereo Coupler, Female / Female

Appears sturdy, and makes a nice click sound when cables are inserted. However the click is meaningless. The cable had to be stuck so far into the connector to make stereo contact it would not hold. I ended up with mono audio on my recording. If I ever use this again, I will wait for the clicks, then strongly tape the cables to the connector. I'm debating a return, but it's not amazon's fault and don't want them to incur the expense.Get more detail about 3.5mm Stereo Coupler, Female / Female.

TOPRAM 32GB CLASS 6 SDHC High Speed Flash Memory Card (32 GB SD Secure Digital High Capacity Card) This instant

I purchased this chip at the end of September 2009, however, I didn't decide on the camera until the end of November 2009. (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001PKTR76/ref=oss_product)

I have used this camera/chip exclusively together and with a MacBook to retrieve the images (I only mention this because the Mac leaves . files and .DS files behind but I normally format the chip every time I put it back in the camera)

The last picture I took was SDC11101.JPG which I think means I have taken 1101 pictures since I have started with this camera. I can't imagine I've taken 11,101 pictures already. I'll have to dig to see what the numbering scheme is for this camera to know for sure. Maybe it's half? I do take a lot of pics when I take them.

I have taken pics at the office xmas party, and various other events, but nothing like I used to with my old Fuji Z1 (much smaller)

Anyway. I went to Joshua Tree National Park last weekend (May 8, 2010) and the first time I turned on my camera, it wouldn't display everything, then finally showed CARD ERROR. ouch. I turned off the camera, took out the card, put it back and turned on the camera and things started normal again. OK, took a handful of pictures, turned off the camera and went to the next stop.

Turned on the camera, no problems. Took a few pictures and got a CARD ERROR again. Turned off the camera, waited, turned on the camera again and things worked. I was a bit worried that either the chip would stop being able to take pictures or the camera wouldn't come on all the way again. But things seemed to be fine.

I take a lot of pics of things so I can get the right picture and I also take lots of surrounding area so I can use autostitch to make a nice panorama picture. When I got home and transferred the images to my computer, I noticed that there were pictures missing. The numeric order was correct, but there should have been more. Whole areas that I had shot were just not there. But the numbers still showed. 891, 892, 893, 894 like nothing was wrong.

I formatted the card again - using the camera and today I used the camera for my University rehersal for our commencement tomorrow. I took many pictures but once again, missing frames. Frames that were there. I was just clicking away and making sure we had a 'visual' seating arrangement and I took one persons picture a couple of times and she mentioned how close it was, and I zoomed in to the 10x Optical and took her picture, it only showed her eyes, nose and mouth because it was so close. I then clicked the play button to show her, and of course she thought too close. - But the Picture was there to Play and Show. I took more pics and when I returned to my desk, put in the chip to a PC now, and copied the pics off, not only was HER pic NOT there, I am sure I am missing many more pics I took.

I put the card back into the camera and 'scrolled' but still didn't see them/her pictures - And the picture number order was correct.

1000, 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004 etc. etc.,

Where are my pictures?

I am glad this has a 5 year limited warrenty. I will contact the manufacture and see about a 'fresh' card.Get more detail about TOPRAM 32GB CLASS 6 SDHC High Speed Flash Memory Card (32 GB SD Secure Digital High Capacity Card).

M-Audio Keystation 88ES Midi Controller Immediately

My main keyboard which I have had for quite a while is a Roland Fantom S88. I love it, but when compared to other keys, the action is kind of like cinder blocks stuck in mud. So after a time I have adopted a pretty heavy handed style. Every once in a while if I get too aggressive, I can hear a bit of plastic creaking on the M-Audio. But it's been a few months and nothing has broken yet, so short of a hammer, I feel pretty certain its a close to worse case scenario for abuse. I don't know if it will last close to forever, like those keyboards that cost a well over a grand. But for the price, even one year, is one less I have to spend on worrying about getting a main replacement.

For my purpose of using internal MIDI instruments within a DAW and having one consistent playing surface for multiple keyboards, it has worked great so far. From my experience the action is slightly stiffer then a Alesis A6, Juno-G Roland JUNO-G 61 Key Workstation Music Keyboard and Korg PA80, ever so lighter then a SH-201 Roland SH-201 49-Key Music Keyboard Synthesizer , and like balsa wood compared to the S88. In my opinion comparable and similar to those keys mentioned, (except the semi-truck keyed Fantom).

The USB cord could have been longer (a lot longer). The advertised programing is really pretty rudimentary in practice, unless you got no other choice and a knack for remembering what the slew of hidden functions are assigned to which keys.

As a straight out MIDI controller, I'm satisfied with this purchase.Get more detail about M-Audio Keystation 88ES Midi Controller.

Panasonic RPSDW16GU1K 16GB SDHC High Capacity Memory Card Class 10 Best Quality

The price is to good to be true. I recently purchased a Panasonic AG-HMC150 AVCCAM that shoots on an SDHC card. I was led to believe that a high class card such as this would be the perfect match...Well I was wrong. The reason I bought the class 10 card was to enable the high writing speed the camera-recorder needs. Now I'm sitting here writing this review feeling like a fool. If your looking to get the highest quality out of your AG-HMC150 DON'T buy this card. I am only allowed to shoot in HA and HE modes. We all know the reasons why we buy the AG-HMC150 is to get the PH(Professional HighDef.) 1080. BTW I love my AG-HMC150. Call up your camera-recorder customer services hot line before you purchase any SDHC card. Another thing is my new MacBook Pro SD card reader can't recognize the card either. I'v been reading reviews about the classes in SDHC and the highest in class doesn't mean the best in class. You must purchase a card reader compatible with the SDHC(Secure Digital High Capacity) in order to log and transfer your data. They go for an extra $10-$20 bucks and there worth it. Don't be a fool and think this card will out perform the others, I don't want you to make the same mistake as I have.Get more detail about Panasonic RPSDW16GU1K 16GB SDHC High Capacity Memory Card Class 10.

Sony Wireless Bluetooth Microphone Buy Now

Range was much better than anticipated... as far as 579 feet! See video on YouTube (ECM-HW2 lilipuha).
Quality excellent. I use this to record cello in lessons and concerts. Does a fine job in 5.1 mode.
Wind sock REALLY works... and hides that bright blue light without diminishing essential sound quality.
Interesting that using Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0, the Mic channel is the "Front Left & Right" channels, rather than the Center channel as described in the literature. Used this mic in presence of 802-11n LAN without adverse effect.Get more detail about Sony Wireless Bluetooth Microphone.

Naxa Dual Wireless Microphone System - NX984 Order Now

I'm using these microphones for a karaoke party and I haven't tested it out with a bunch of people yet but I have tested it out with two people singing at the same time.
I found the microphones to be weak BUT they work!
Sometimes the microphones stop working but if you just wiggle or play around with the switch it works.

For the price, this is a great microphone. If you are looking for something more durable/reliable I wouldn't rely on these. I also have another dual system, Nady that I found in the garbage lol. Nady is much stronger and louder.

But for me and my karaoke needs, this was just fine!!Get more detail about Naxa Dual Wireless Microphone System - NX984.

Discount Belkin PureAV Digital Optical Audio Cable (12 Feet)

For all intents and purposes, this cable "works" -- but as another reviewer noted, it does not fit correctly into all optical ports. It fits (clicks) just fine in half of my devices, but the other half it's essentially just sitting in the hole. Slightest movement could/would knock it loose.

I will probably be ordering a different cable to replace this, as I don't like having loose connections like that.

Cheapest Chauvet Hurricane 900 Fog Machine

We purchased this unit to manufacture smoke for a student show. It takes a few minutes to warm up before generating smoke. The smoke stops when you turn it off. We used flexible, plastic dryer hose to direct the smoke away from the machine (and where the operator was sitting).
Note that the effect works like fog, which hugs the ground and not like smoke from a chimney, which should rise. But this was acceptable for our purposes. We hope to use it again for future productions. But if it only worked the one time, it was worth the cost for the effect.Get more detail about Chauvet Hurricane 900 Fog Machine.

Cheap Monster M ROCK-12 1/4-Inch Rock Instrument Cable (12 Feet)

The biggest question I ask about these cables, are they worth the premium charged above more normal cables? The key to me is the lower end 100 series Monster cables, Monster S100-I-12 Standard 100 1/4-Inch Instrument Cable (12 Feet). The answer is mixed, and depends on what you are looking for.

The cable ends are very heavy, they are metal and do unscrew. In some ways this is probably good, they feel good in your hand plugging and unplugging. The jacks are gold plated and look like they would last a lifetime. On the other hand, the series 100 plugs are a molded plastic end, with a good bit of flex to them, and they are lighter weight. So the choice is, heavy, shiny gold; or light weight, gray/black? For me, I like the heft of these cables.

Construction-wise these are likely lifetime cables. Check out the pictures I've posted. The metal housing screws into the jack. There is an O-ring to seal the top portion of the threads. Inside the wires are soldered solidly to the jack, and then the whole thing is cast in solid acrylic or plastic. Unless you run over this end with a truck or pulled really really hard like tug of war, the wire is never separating from the jack. I don't think the actual 1/4 inch jack is any sturdier than other jacks.

Sound is excellent. They are clear clean cables. Are they better than the 100's? Oh maybe a tiny bit. Maybe a little clearer, cleaner sound. But it isn't a huge difference.

Bottom line, for gigging, probably go with the 100's. The jack ends will get stepped on at some point and they are cheap enough to replace. For practice or in your house, these are probably the way to go. They do look particularly good plugged into a Marshall half stack.

These cables are not outrageously over priced like everything else Monster Cable. Study different one quarter inch jack cables and you'll see these are priced very close to everyone else. This is not the case of the HDMI cables at the big box store for fifty times what you should pay for them.Get more detail about Monster M ROCK-12 1/4-Inch Rock Instrument Cable (12 Feet).

Order Pyle PPSJ-30 Speakon Speaker Connector to 1/4-Inch Speaker Cable (30 Feet)

I was very pleased with these cables. I bought 2 for an amp I purchased with Speakon outputs and 1/4 inch inputs for the monitors I was powering. The cables work great, are very heavy duty and truly appear to be of professional quality. The only thing I can't speak to at this time is the reliability, because I have not had them very long. Based upon the weight (12 gage) of the cable and what appears to be quality connectors on both ends, I expect no problems. I would not hesitate to recommend or buy these again myself.Get more detail about Pyle PPSJ-30 Speakon Speaker Connector to 1/4-Inch Speaker Cable (30 Feet).

Where To Buy Music Ace Deluxe

I bought this program in hopes of learning the piano. Just like anything else though you have to have patience and the time to put forth, so don't expect this program to instantly turn you into Beethoven.

I started using this with very minimal musical knowledge, and I must say, I learned a lot as far and notes, chords, major / minor....ya know, the technical jargon of music. It also helped me to start using both of my hands at the same time which I am pretty good at now. But I will be honest, I did not devote much of my time, so I only have myself to blame for not advancing much.

This is a great way to learn. Especially when using a midi keyboard. I tried reading website, books, watching learning DVDs....nothing helped as much as this software did. Its a great combination of seeing, interaction, reading, and it is also fun.

I will say it is, however, on the kiddy side as far as the cartoons go, but heck...I'm nothing but a big kid!

I recommend this software for learning to play the piano.

Sony ECM-DS30P Electret Condenser Digital Microphone Decide Now

I purchased this Sony ECM-DS30P mic to use with my Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera. I wanted a little better sound capture at not a huge price. I trust the Sony name brand in sound equipment and the price was right. The total length of the mic is 2.2 inches (56.5 mm) and its' diameter is 0.45 inches (11.42 mm). It does capture sound in digital stereo. I haven't used any soft or hardware to determine the sound quality compared to the built in mic of the video camera. It does sound better to me, but don't get it twisted, it doesn't come anywhere close to the mics I use with my hand held HD camcorder. This mic does have a pivot point which allows you to rotate the sound capture head up to about a 45 degree angle. Because the external mic port on my Kodak cam is on the side, plugging this mic directly in would have its' sound capture ports (remember it is a stereo mic) facing up or down or front to back. Not ideal! Therefore, I purchased a 90 degree stereo adapter (with a male and female connection) from my local Radio Shack. It allows me to rotate the mic in almost infinite positions including straight down by the pocket cam's side for easy storage. There are probably better mics out there, but let's keep it real, for the price and quality and its' intended use this Sony ECM-DS30P microphone is hard to beat. I will up load some photos shortly.Get more detail about Sony ECM-DS30P Electret Condenser Digital Microphone.

Lowest Price Tascam MPGT1 Portable MP3 Guitar Trainer

Ok, I will do my best to answer everyone's questions that aren't asked here yet, in which I also had before I purchased this item. This trainer is just amazing. It helps you out in so many ways. First off, this CAN be used simply as a portable amp, exactly as the "Dean Stack in the Box". I know I'm not reviewing that item, but I would like to give some information about it. The Dean stack in the box is a great portable headphone amp. It has great volume, great distortion, and most of all (in which no one else covers) it carries through great pinch harmonics great. Unlike the portable pignose amp, where it does not carry through pinch harmonics one bit. The Dean in a box though can be a pain changing the 9v battery, which can lead to the wires breaking, wich is what happened to me. It was still an amazing product though, with amazing sound, and amazing pinch harmonic carry through.

Now, with that said, it leads me to this. THIS guitar trainer, has GREAT sustain also, and carrys through pinch harmonics just like a normal amp, and jsut like dean in the box. They will not die out like the pignose amp. Also, it has a rechargeable battery in it, so there are no wires to rip off, like dean in the box while changing a battery. This is also built like a tank. Super tough and durable. Makes you want to take good care of it right away. The rechargable battery on it also lasts a long time. I would say well over many many hours.

I want to clarify what exactly the guitar cancelling feature does. It does not cancel the guitar out, so you can substitute your own. It instead pushes all other sound (vocals, drums, etc) into the background (which is dim but still heard) while the guitar in the track shines through so you can hear it clearly and study it more, note for note. Let me tell you, it works very very well. Like one reviewer said, you do hear wayyy more than you have heard before. And this is coming from me, a guitarist of many years, whom has an ear for music, and picks up on every single note and plays by ear. I was even very amazed.

I will now do the best I can to break everything down into all the positive parts of owning this trainer, as there are no disadvantages that I have found:

* This trainer CAN be used as a portable headphone amp, without any song playing in the background, and it does have many amp effects, from clean, to overdrive and distortion for metal (which I play). It has great affects like reverb, chorus, flanger, overdrive, etc.

* Is not cheap, like other portable devices, so no wires will break off changing batteries, since you simply dont have any batteries to change.

* Built very strong and durable.

* It DOES let you create sub-folders, so you can put entire folders into it and sort by artist or albums, instead of having one long list ot a thousand tracks.

* Guitar cancelling feature (as described above) works fantastic.

* While playing a track, you can adjust the volume of the track playback, and your guitar volume, so if the track volume, or guitar volume is higher than the other, you can equalize them at the same volume, or make your guitar volume louder, or the track volume louder.

* You can slow the track speed down 50%, which is amazing. You can also keep the pitch the same, so whether you speed the track up or slow it down, it wont sound like a chipmunk, or someone from a horror movie. It keeps the original tone. You can, however, turn this function off.

* You can turn the pitch up or down, so if it is in standard e tuning, you can chance the tuning of the song. Although it WILL NOT drop all the way down to drop d tuning or anything like that, it still works great.

* You can quickly pick a start and stop point for it to start looping, so if there is a solo, or any part like that, that you want to keep going over and over until you learn it, you can loop it.

* You can create a playlist, just like on an mp3 player.

* This can be used as an mp3 player (although I never would, since it's expensive, and I never want to break it.

* Has a ton of storage. About 900 MB worth (actually a hair more.

So all in all, this trainer is simply amazing! It does exactly what it says it does, and a whole lot more. Even if I didn't need it for a trainer, but was simply looking for a portable headphone amp for travelling, I would easily choose this over dean stack in the box or anything else. I was not disappointed one single bit. I love this thing.

Hope this helps! Enjoy!Get more detail about Tascam MPGT1 Portable MP3 Guitar Trainer.

Low Price H2SJ Silicone Jacket for Zoom H4n

If you buy the ZOOM H2 then you must buy this. I have already dropped my ZOOM H2 and I know it would have definitely broke if I hadn't had this protective covering.

The ZOOM H2's case is too flimsy not to have this. Don't buy it (ZOOM H2) without getting this cover.Get more detail about H2SJ Silicone Jacket for Zoom H4n.
